Bengals defeat Warhawks under sunny skies

The St. Paul Bengals bantam football team performed well during their last regular season game on Oct. 14 against Wainwright’s bantam team, the Wainwright Warhawks, winning 39-14.

ST. PAUL - The St. Paul Bengals bantam football team performed well during their last regular season game on Oct. 14 against Wainwright’s bantam team, the Wainwright Warhawks.

During the first half, the Bengals scored multiple touchdowns, until the momentum slowed down in the second half. And during the fourth quarter, with two minutes left on the clock, the Warhawks managed to defend their goal multiple times against the Bengals.

But the Bengals were still up, eventually nailing a final touchdown to end the game 39-14.

“We had some hiccups in the second half, but overall, it was a good performance,” said Derek Zapisocki, head coach for the Bengals.

The Bengals remain undefeated throughout the season, with five wins and zero losses. This means the Bengals have earned a bye, automatically advancing them to the semi-final on Oct. 28.

Zapisocki said the team is playing well and the coach is confident heading into playoffs.

But they “still got to play the game,” he said. Zapisocki expects to be playing the Warhawks again on Oct. 28.

Wainwright exposed some of the Bengals’ weaknesses, said Zapisocki. “So, I’m sure they’ll make their adjustments and it’d be a tougher game.” In the meantime, the Bengals will make their own adjustments to get ready for playoffs.

While it will be tough to keep the team motivated, with two weeks off from the field, Zapisocki will tell his players to “keep doing what you’re doing,” with the aim of keeping the momentum going.
