LAKELAND - Representatives from Northern Lights Public Schools, Lakeland Catholic Schools and Conseil scolaire Centre-Est met on Feb. 4 to discuss student participation in sporting tournaments and games, ultimately deciding to resume competitions on Feb. 10.

Senior administration from the three school divisions had previously agreed to follow the recommendation in the new provincial Guidance for Schools (K-12) and School Buses document that suggested limiting extracurricular sport tournaments and inter-school games, due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Starting on Thursday, students in grades 7 to 12 in all three school divisions will be allowed to return to competition.

"This includes inter-school games and tournaments," reads a joint statement from the three school divisions.

"A tentative return to competition for students in grades 4 to 6 has been set for Feb. 22. Spectators, however, are still not allowed to attend games or tournaments held at schools within the three school divisions.

"This is the procedure that has been in place since the start of the 2021-2022 school year."

St. Paul area

St. Paul Education has allowed students to continue to compete in league games since students returned from an extended winter break. On Jan. 24, St. Paul Education decided to allow students to participate in tournaments, aligning itself with other community groups such as minor hockey associations.
