College classes offered to Town of Bonnyville staff

Portage College offers micro-credential opportunities to municipal staff and elected officials

BONNYVILLE - Town of Bonnyville employees and elected officials will have access to greater educational and professional growth opportunities through a three-year partnership between the municipality and Portage College.  

The agreement, which came into effect on Jan. 1 this year, and goes until Dec. 31, 2027, Portage College is extending micro-credential training to municipal employees and elected officials. Those who are eligible will be able to enroll in one free course annually. Courses offered include a variety of micro-credentials, including permaculture and business courses.  

A Memorandum of Understanding signed by both parties outlines annual reviews to make certain that the agreement has prolonged benefits for Portage College and the Town of Bonnyville.  

This agreement is being praised both by Portage College President Nancy Broadbent and Bonnyville Mayor Elisa Brosseau.  

"Portage College is truly honoured to collaborate with the Town of Bonnyville in this forward-thinking initiative,” Broadbent stated. “Our shared commitment to lifelong learning and community development is at the core of this partnership, and we are excited about the positive impact it will have on individuals and the region as a whole." 

Brousseau said the partnership is a testament to the Town of Bonnyville’s dedication to supporting post-secondary education and fostering a culture of lifelong learning.  

“Council recognizes the important role Portage College plays in delivering education in the northeast t, and we are proud to contribute to the development of our community and empower our employees through access to quality education." 

Bill Rogers, chief administrative officer for the Town of Bonnyville, also praised the partnership. 

“This is exciting for the Town of Bonnyville because it will provide us with an affordable option to offer our people access to continuing educational opportunities, and I’m sure just as exciting for Portage at it potentially gains them new students,” Rogers said.  

Portage College has several campus and learning locations across the Lakeland, including Lac La Biche, Cold Lake, Saddle Lake, Boyle, Frog Lake, St. Paul and Whitefish Lake.
