LAC LA BICHE - Since 2012, the Green Initiatives Calendar has been produced by Lac La Biche County and given residents of the region an opportunity to not only capture the natural beauty of local landscapes and wildlife, but also to win prizes for the photographs they submit.
Lac La Biche County is presently taking submissions for the 2025 Green Initiatives Calendar.
Alanna Wowk with the municipality’s Environmental Services department says photo entries will be accepted until July 31, with the winners announced in August. The 2025 calendar is expected to be ready by December of this year. Wowk says there are 13 winning photographers-one for each month of the year-along with one cover photo.
“Each winning photographer will receive $100 in County Dollars to be used at a local business,” Wowk told Lakeland This Week.
Over 12 years the annual calendar contest has been taking place, Wowk continued, County officials have seen a multitude of exceptional photographs of the local community. Winners, she said, have been honoured with public recognition as well as prizes that have varied from year to year.
“Within the picturesque landscapes of Lac La Biche County, a lot of photographic talent thrives,” she said. “We extend our deepest gratitude to all who participate and have previously entered in the contest, cherishing every entry as a testament to creativity and vision.”
Educating with pretty pictures
Wowk says the initiative not only stands as a beacon of community pride that illuminates the essence of Lac La Biche County, but the annual calendar also serves as a source of vital information on environmental stewardship, agricultural programs, as well as sustainable waste management.
“Through the lens of these captivating photographs, we not only showcase the breathtaking beauty of our region but also serve as stewards of knowledge,” she said. “It's a compendium of our collective commitment to both our community's splendor and its well-being.”
Regarding the criteria for the submission of photographs of local landscapes and other scenes that exemplify Lac La Biche County, Wowk explained that pictures must be of high resolution. File sizes should be at least 2MB.
Additionally, photographers are limited to a total of five photo submissions which must be taken within Lac La Biche County. The image location should be noted on the entry. Photographs, she continued, can be of any of the four seasons.
“We encourage photographers to submit photos from all seasons,” she said.
