ST. PAUL - The County of St. Paul is expanding its recycling efforts and helping residents ensure specific items don't end up in the landfill.

One program will not only help Mother Nature, but will also help a few area organizations with fundraising efforts during a time where many fundraisers are off limits.

Residents can now take their empty beverage containers for recycling to the County of St. Paul transfer stations. The The Elk Point 4-H Beef Club, Lac Santé Recreation Family Society, and the Mallaig and District Ag Society applied and were selected to collect beverage containers from the transfer stations until December of 2021.

The chosen non-profits support youth and community efforts, and the work members put into collecting the bottles will help support the organizations.

“This bottle recycling program will help these clubs with their fundraising during this COVID-19 year when fundraising has been difficult,” says Tim Mahdiuk, Director of Community Services with the County of St. Paul. “The clubs will take the beverage containers to Alberta Depots and collect the recycling fees.”

The County's transfer stations are also now part of the Electronics Recycling Pilot Project. A number of electronics have been added to the list of what can be recycled.

“The electronics recycling project will keep audio visual equipment, small home appliances, portable power tools, and other household electronics out of the landfills,“ says Mahdiuk. “There is no charge to recycle these products during the two-year pilot project. All of the electronics will be processed safely and responsibly in Alberta.”

The County's transfer stations will be reverting to winter hours as of Nov. 1. The winter hours are 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on the days the transfer stations are open.

Transfer stations are located at Ashmont, Mallaig, St. Edouard, St. Lina, Vincent Lake and Whitney Lake. The locations and hours of the County of St. Paul Transfer Stations and program information can be found on the County’s website when looking under Waste Management.
