Family Violence Prevention month events return for November

A candlelight vigil and Walk a Mile in her Shoes will take place this month in St. Paul.

ST. PAUL - While events are once again scaled back due to public health measures that remain in place, the Capella Centre women's shelter in St. Paul will continue to create awareness around a crucial issue during Family Violence Prevention month.

Up first was the official proclamation signing on Friday morning. In the past, the Town of St. Paul mayor has signed the proclamation as part of the Walk of Hope, which would bring people from various organizations and schools together.

But, with large group gatherings still not being recommended, a group of employees from the shelter were joined by the mayor for a group photo and low-key proclamation signing.

Family Violence Prevention month "is a time to increase awareness of the warning signs of family violence and the resources and supports available, so we can work together to end family violence and build healthier relationships in our communities," according to information released by the Government of Alberta.

Two hashtags have been created provincially, in hopes of increasing awareness through a virtual platform - #GoPurpleAB and #WhereToTurn

Those needing help can turn to the Family Violence Info Line (310-1818), which is available toll-free to Albertans 24/7 in over 170 languages. The Family Violence Info Line chat is also available 24/7 daily in English. Emergency shelters also exist across the province.

Events will go ahead

One of the annual events that will move forward in 2021 is the candlelight vigil hosted by the Capella Centre. The event is scheduled for Nov. 17 at 5:30 p.m. at Lagasse Park by the white gazebo.

People are invited to take part in the evening event as a show of support for those experiencing domestic violence, while also improving awareness in the community "by taking the issue out of the darkness."

Also moving forward but with a slightly different approach is the Walk a Mile in her Shoes event.

The initiative encourages men to put on a pair of red high heels, raise funds, and create awareness in a fun way, around a serious issue.

This year's event will take place at the St. Paul Ag Corral, with teams stopping by throughout the day on Nov. 25 to complete the task of wearing and walking in the red high heels. In order to avoid a large group gathering, teams will each run a timed relay at a specific time.

Teams will be stopping by the Ag Corral from 8 a.m. to 7 p.m.

If someone is interested in taking part but does not have a team, they can contact the shelter at 780-645-5132. Teams can register by emailing [email protected]

The Walk a Mile in her Shoes initiative is done in a number of communities across the country and beyond. High heel shoes are provided by the shelter and are available in a variety of sizes.
