First-year hockey players ticketed for 'skating too fast'

Cpl. Bobby Burgess handed out tickets to a bunch of pint-sized hockey players after they beat him in a race on Friday afternoon at the Clancy Richard Arena in St. Paul.

ST. PAUL - There was a police presence on the ice at the Clancy Richard Arena in St. Paul on Friday afternoon.

In a season filled with unpredictability, Cpl. Bobby Burgess, who is a volunteer coach with St. Paul & District Minor Hockey, decided to surprise a small group of young first-year players. He arrived at Friday's practice dressed in his RCMP uniform - complete with a radar gun and ticket booklet.

After measuring how fast the hockey players could shoot pucks into the net, Burgess challenged them to a skating race. The young hockey players appeared to have won the race, but Burgess then presented each of the players with a ticket for "skating too fast."

Normally, the first-year hockey players would have wrapped up the hockey season by now, but due to the pandemic and a long break that saw arenas shut down across the province for part of the winter, the St. Paul arena was still busy with small groups hitting the ice last week.
