Garden plots still available at St. Paul Community Gardens

ST. PAUL – With the arrival of the warm weather comes the excitement of gardening season for many residents in St. Paul. The Community Garden Society of St. Paul has been preparing garden plots for community members eager to start their planting, or those interested in learning about gardening.

Gardening plots can be rented for $20 per plot, and there is still room for more people to get involved.

David Robinson, chairman of the society, said that while most of the plots are taken for the season, there is some space available.

One of the sites of the St. Paul Community Garden Society is located just behind the town hall, while another is located just outside of town near the transfer station.

The process to rent a plot is easy, as the plots are prepped and ready to go for the renters, said Robinson. The garden society supplies compost, and there are two water tanks for members to use with their watering cans.

Robinson notes that there is no actual deadline to rent a plot, but most people aim to get their gardens planted after the May long weekend.

The garden society is also welcoming to new members, said Robinson, adding seasoned gardeners that can sometimes be seen tending to their plot at the garden sites are willing to help those who have questions.

“We have lots of expertise amongst the gardeners and they're very willing to share [their knowledge],” Robinson said.

To those new to gardening, Robinson suggests they start with a raised garden bed, as it is a smaller, and is a more contained area that is easier to manage.

The garden society also plans to host a garden tour that has been on hold due to the pandemic. The plan is to bring back the tour, working alongside Communities in Bloom and Champions for Change.

“If people have nice gardens, and they would like us to visit them,” they can get a hold of Robinson or the society to be put on the tour schedule.

Robinson encourages anyone interested in renting a garden plot to call him directly at 587-252-4651.
