LAKELAND - The deadline to register to vote for this fall’s municipal council and school board elections is on Friday, Aug. 15. Candidate nomination papers can be filed until 12 noon on Sept. 22.
Eligible voters can register, confirm, or update their registration through VoterLink, the online portal managed by Elections Alberta. Elections Alberta will share the Permanent Electors Register with municipalities and school boards ahead of the election.
According to the Government of Alberta website, voters who are not on the Permanent Elections Register will still be able to vote by filling out Form 13 at the polling station and providing identification which proves their name and current address.
To be eligible to vote, you must be a Canadian citizen, at least 18 years old on election day, and a resident of the municipality or school district you wish to vote in.
Candidates for municipal elections
People who wish to run for municipal council must file their nomination papers by 12 noon on Sept. 22.
According to the candidates guide published by the Municipal Affairs, election candidates must be Canadian citizens, at least 18 years old as of nomination day, and a resident of the jurisdiction for the six consecutive months preceding nomination day.
For jurisdictions with wards, candidates must be a resident of the ward for the six consecutive months preceding nomination day.
Candidates are not allowed to accept campaign contributions or incur expenses until their nomination papers are filed. Municipal candidates may spend up to $20,000 on campaign expenses.
Municipal employees are not permitted to run for office unless they take an unpaid leave of absence.
Candidates for school trustee
People who wish to run for school trustee positions must also file their nomination papers by 12 noon on Sept. 22.
According to the School Board Elections Guide published by Alberta Education and Childcare, candidates for school board trustee must be eligible to vote, a resident of the jurisdiction and ward in which they are running for six months preceding nomination day, and meet any faith or language requirements of the board they are running for.
Trade unions and individuals within Alberta may contribute up to $5,000 in aggregate to school board candidates. Candidates may contribute up to $10,000 “that isn’t reimbursed to the candidate from the candidate’s campaign account by the end of the campaign period to the candidate’s own campaign expenses.”
School board employees are not eligible to run unless they take an unpaid leave of absence.
Lac La Biche
Candidate nomination papers can be submitted by e-mail to [email protected] or in person at McArthur Place. There is also a $100 deposit which needs to be paid at the time of filing.
Lac La Biche County council has nine members, including one mayor and eight councillors representing seven wards. There are two councillors for Ward 7 (The Hamlet of Lac La Biche).

Town of St. Paul
Town of St. Paul council consists of one mayor and six councillors. Nomination forms can be filed in person at the Town of St. Paul office and must include a $100 deposit.
As of Aug. 13, David Fodness is the only person who has registered their intention to run for council.
Northern Lights Public Schools
According to the Northern Lights Public Schools website, nomination papers can be filed in person at the Division Office in Bonnyville from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. or 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. Monday through Thursday and Fridays from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. until Aug 31. From Sept. 1 to Sept. 21, papers can be filed on normal working days between 8:30 a.m. and 4:30 p.m., and until 12 noon on Sept. 22.
The NLPS Board of Trustees includes nine trustees from five wards.
According to the NLPS website, as of Aug. 13, the following people have registered as candidates:

Lakeland Catholic
The Lakeland Catholic School Division Board of Trustees consists of seven trustees representing three wards. In addition to the residency, citizenship, and age requirements, candidates for the LCSD Board must be baptized Catholics. According to information on the LCSD website, both Western and Eastern Rite Catholics are eligible to run as trustees.
As of Aug. 13, there are no registered candidates listed on the board website.
Conseil-Scolaire Centre-Est
The board of Conseil-Scolaire Centre-Est includes five trustees, including four Catholic and one public position. All trustees must be either francophone or have “sufficient proficiency in the French Language” according to the CSCE website.
Nomination papers can be submitted in person at the Conseil Scolaire Centre-Est office in St. Paul during regular business hours.
As of Aug. 13, no one has submitted their Notice of Intent forms.
