Man hiding from RCMP in barn arrested

On Feb. 1, eight people failed to attend court in relation to a variety of charges. Warrants have now been issued for their arrest.

BONNYVILLE - Despite a man's best efforts to evade the law, a man from Iron River has been remanded into custody after failing to appear in court on a number of occasions. 

In October of 2020, a 57-year-old man was arrested and charged for impaired driving, driving over 0.08 and uttering threats. On Feb. 2, 2021, he failed to attend court and an arrest warrant was issued.

"That arrest warrant was subsequently executed and a new court date was set but the male failed to attend court again on that date of June 15, 2021. Yet another arrest warrant was issued, executed and the male was issued another court date of Jan. 4, 2022, however he again failed to attend," according to Bonnyville RCMP.

On Jan. 28, a member of the Bonnyville RCMP attended a rural farm northeast of Iron River, looking for the man who again found himself on warrant for the original offences and the numerous incidents of failing to attend court. 

"The member located the male hiding in the rafters in a barn on the property and arrested him without incident," according to police. This time, the man was remanded into custody and is now set to appear in Bonnyville Provincial Court on Feb. 15.

Traffic services

Over the past week, St. Paul Traffic Services helped with Traffic Safety enforcement in the Bonnyville Detachment area. 

Over 20 motorists were charged with a variety of offences such as speeding, failure to wear a seat belt, car seat violations, tinted windows, and distracted driving.

Copper wire theft

On Jan. 28, Bonnyville RCMP received a report of a break and enter at an oil lease side located east of Bonnyville where copper wire was reportedly stolen.  Anyone with information regarding the break and enter is urged to contact Bonnyville RCMP.

Eight people fail to attend court

On Feb. 1, eight people who had been charged with various criminal offences failed to attend their court appearances.

"The criminal offences these individuals were compelled to court to answer to range from uttering threats, dangerous operation of a motor vehicle, possession of stolen property, suspended driving, sexual assault, breaking and entering, mischief over $5,000, possession of drugs for the purpose of trafficking, harassing communications, assault with a weapon and assaulting a police officer," according to Bonnyville RCMP. 

All eight individuals are now being charged with failing to appear in court and warrants have been issued for their arrest.

Suspicious vehicle

After coming across a suspicious vehicle in a convenience store parking lot, Bonnyville RCMP found a man who was known to be on warrants exiting the vehicle.

Police noticed the vehicle at about 11:15 p.m. on Feb. 1. The 29-year-old man from Kehewin exited the vehicle, entered the nearby store and tried to hide in the washroom, according to police.

"The male was arrested for his outstanding warrants and was found to have a substantial amount of meth on his person, as well as identification that did not belong to him. He was additionally arrested and charged with possession of meth for the purpose of trafficking, obstruction, identity theft and failing to comply with an undertaking."

The man was brought before a Justice of the Peace who set cash bail at $200, with a first appearance court date of March 1 set.

Assault

A 46-year-old woman from Bonnyville was charged with assault on Jan. 30. Police were dispatched to a residence in the 4700 block of 39 Street for a disturbance. A court date of April 26 has been set.

Disturbance

On Feb. 3, Bonnyville RCMP responded to a local business following a report of an intoxicated man causing a disturbance. The suspect was arrested and later released when he was sober. He was issued a violation ticket for drinking alcohol in a public place.
