BONNYVILLE - The rubber will hit the road at the Bonnyville Regional Airport for years to come.
The Bonnyville Gear Grabbers have entered into a Memorandum of Understanding to carry out the club's annual drag racing events within the MD of Bonnyville.
Through a Memorandum of Understanding, the MD’s council agreed to a long-term commitment with the Bonnyville Gear Grabbers to allow the non-profit to use the regional airport for its annual drag racing weekend event.
This year’s racing event will be held July 22 to 24 on the airport’s runways with a Test and Tune event for racers scheduled earlier in June.
The decision came after a delegation presented to council on Feb. 23 at a regular council meeting, at which point a motion was passed directing administration to bring back additional information regarding a long-term commitment between the MD of Bonnyville and the non-profit.
The MD will provide support and assistance for the racing and test and tune events in the form of manpower pending availability and at the discretion of the municipality’s CAO, according to the Memorandum of Understanding.
The organization will also have to provide dates by Dec. 1 for the upcoming year’s events.
If this agreement were to be terminated, either party would have to provide a minimum of 12 months written notice, states MD documents.
Council approves sponsorships
The Bonnyville District 4-H club received a $4,500 donation from the MD to cover the costs of food for the organization's upcoming annual District Show and Sale event on May 29 at the Cold Lake Exhibition Park.
The MD’s council approved the sponsorship at the April 27 council meeting, with the donation being funded from the 2022 Agriculture Services Board budget.
This is the first time the event has been able to be held in person since 2019.
Last year, the MD provided $2,000 to help 4-H cover the costs related to technology for a virtual event. This funding was in the amount of $500 for each of the three Bonnyville District 4-H Clubs, as well as the Goodridge 4-H Club.
Council will golf
While not unanimous, council agreed to sponsor a golf team at a cost of $1,400 for the Healthier Communities Golf Tournament to be held at Lac La Biche Golf and Country Club, with proceeds going to the Lac La Biche Regional Health Foundation and Portage College.
The tournament is scheduled for July 8.
