Online threats "unfounded" after Aurora and Vera M schools lock doors

Lac La Biche RCMP say alleged threats unfounded and security measures lifted

School doors were locked and outdoor recess was cancelled at Aurora Middle School and Vera M. Elementary School in Lac La Biche on Monday morning, as enhanced security measures were in place following an alleged social media threat.

Northern Lights Public Schools officials informed parents and the community about the security measures at the neighbouring schools just before 11 am, by text and email. The notifications said RCMP were investigating social media posts "that referenced a potential threat" to the schools.

Shortly after the first announcement, school division officials released a second notification saying  RCMP had concluded the investigation, and determined the threats were unfounded.

The enhanced security measures were removed after being in place for about an hour.

School division officials are thanking community members for their patience and understanding as the allegations were investigated.

The alleged threats were reportedly seen by students who alerted staff members.

The Lac La Biche POST newsroom has contacted the Lac La Biche RCMP for a comment on their investigation. Any new information  will be included in an update on this story.
