Portage College offers tours, free BBQ and chance for new career

Portage College campus locations across the Lakeland get ready to show their stuff

LAKELAND - Portage College is preparing to host its annual fall open houses at the Lac La Biche, Cold Lake, and St. Paul Campus locations.

The open houses-which take place in Lac La Biche on Nov. 6, St. Paul on Nov. 7, and Cold Lake on Nov. 8. All three events run from 6-8 p.m. The open houses are designed to provide prospective students with information about academic programs offered at the post-secondary institution and also to meet with instructors and program staff.

The college hosts the open houses in the spring and fall.

Luke Muise, a marketing specialist with Portage College, said the open houses have been beneficial both for the college as well as for interested students.

“They allow us to connect with our communities and they allow the prospective students to get direct answers from the people involved in the programs,” he told Lakeland This Week. “Open houses are a win-win.”

During the open house, information and display tables will be set up representing each program and campus offering, with administration making every effort to have either instructors, program coordinators, or both at tables to answer questions. Those looking at education choices will also get insights from current students.

“We also have a table set up with student advisors who are ready to help anyone who wishes to apply at the event,” he said.

Campus tours will also be available during the open house events. A no-charge barbecue along with draw prizes will also be offered.

According to Muise, the open houses bring in a wide range of potential students ranging from adult learners of all ages to students right out of high school. He said the common questions range from tuition prices and course outlines to what potential career opportunities await graduating students.

“The events are typically well-attended, but we did notice an increase in attendance at all locations during our last round of open houses, which were the first ones we held in-person post-COVID,” he explained. “We welcomed a total of 277 potential students to our campuses at our last round of open houses this past spring.”
