The provincial government is looking for a total of 80 parents and teachers to make up two advisory councils, focused on providing input about the education system.

LAKELAND - Alberta Education is looking for about 80 people to help provide input on the education system.

Chosen individuals will make up a Parent Advisory Council and a Teacher Advisory Council. The councils will be based on the same model that has been used for the Minister’s Youth Council, which is a group of 40 junior high and senior high students who help provide input to the Minister of Education, annually.

“These councils will provide valuable input on the education system directly to the Minister of Education,” according to the Government of Alberta.

“Creating these two advisory councils provides another way for parents and teachers to share their views on education policies and initiatives as we work to improve outcomes for students,” said Minister of Education Adriana LaGrange. “I encourage any interested parent or teacher to apply, and I look forward to hearing the valuable input they will provide.”

The province aims to create advisory councils that reflect the diversity of Alberta, including a variety of geographical locations, school authority types, socio-economic backgrounds and cultural groups.

Those interested can apply online through the Minister's Parent Advisory Council website, or the Minister's Teacher Advisory Council website, accessible through the Government of Alberta website. Applications are open until Aug. 31.

Successful applicants for each council will be announced in the fall. The councils will consist of about 40 members each.

Councils will run for 10-month terms and members will be expected to attend up to four meetings with the minister, per term.
