Rain or Shine the lemonade was fine

Lakeland youth serve up lemonade to hundreds of customers in the rain and sun on Saturday throughout Bonnyville, Cold Lake and Glendon.

BONNYVILLE -  On Saturday, 27 lemonade stands were set up throughout the Village of Glendon, the Town of Bonnyville, and the City of Cold Lake, in a effort to teach youth how to be entrepreneurs.

Fishing Lake Métis Settlement youth also took part in Lemonade Day on June 14. In total, 92 kids ranging from Kindergarten to High school took part in the experiential learning program across the region.

Bringing the event together was Community Futures Lakeland, but making the day a success was the numerous lemonade stand business owners, their community sponsors and the hundreds of customers that braved the stormy weather to get a glass or two of lemonade.

The purpose of Lemonade Day is to inspire youth to have an entrepreneurial spirit, to be business leaders and social advocates. Youth who participated were responsible for acquiring a business licence for their lemonade stand, create a business plan, and lease a spot outside of a business to set up shop.

"Each child attends Lemonade University where they learn the valuable lessons of Lemonade Day - including how to set a goal, make a plan, work the plan, and achieve their dreams," explained Lisa Ford in a Community Futures.

After Lemonade Day wrapped up, youth had to count there earnings and find out if there stand was profitable after taking into account supplies that were purchased.

"Participants of Lemonade Day keep all the money they earn; however, the program encourages them to spend some, save some, and share some. So, many of the kids will donate a portion of their proceeds to a charity of their choice," continued Ford.

Many of the lemonade stand owners interviewed by Lakeland This Week said they would be donating most of their profits to the Bonnyville or Lakeland SPCA.
