RCMP called to Aurora track and field day about disturbance

RCMP and school officials say issue was dealt with quickly. No injuries reported.

LAC LA BICHE - Aurora Middle School students had been running, jumping and throwing at the school's outdoor track and field day on Thursday, but halfway through the event, they were asked to calmly walk into the school as a safety issue was addressed.

Northern Lights Public Schools officials issued an email statement to parents just before 2:30 pm Thursday, saying that students had been brought back into the school to "ensure their safety" as local RCMP were dispatched to the school. Division officials say the precautions were taken after a threat was made to the safety and security of students and staff.

While division officials offered few specific details on the incident citing confidentiality and privacy policies, and police have yet to issue a statement, some witnesses say a young student became angry and verbally abusive to staff at the Grade 4 to 8 school prior to the RCMP's arrival.

Track events continue

School officials say the incident was dealt with quickly by RCMP and school staff.

"Once the officers had dealt with the situation, students went back outside to complete their track and field day events," noted the NLPS statement.

NLPS spokesperson Nicole Garner says supports have been put in place for any students who may have been upset by the occurrence.
