Regional High School athletes acknowledged despite abrupt end to season

ST. PAUL - While a list of awards were handed out to student athletes from St. Paul Regional High School on June 11 through a virtual recording posted to the St. Paul Education YouTube channel, two awards were notably missing from the list.

"This year as a coaching staff, we have decided that it would be too difficult to award our female and male Athlete of the Year without being able to fully participate in all of our scheduled sports," said Hank Smid, athletic director for the school. "Some students did not get the opportunity to compete in sports that they normally would have, and there are a number of students in both categories where the point totals are very close."

Classes were cancelled just as the badminton season was set to begin. The RCMP Road Race, which typically takes place in May, was cancelled, along with the entire track and field season. This left the point totals incomplete and inaccurate, said Smid, adding, it was a difficult decision to make.

Overall, the 2019-20 school year was looking to be one of the best for Regional High.

"We were on pace for surpassing our zone banner total," explained Smid. Two teams placed second at provincials, football for Tier IV and the boys' curling team. Two teams placed third at provincial, which was the 3A boys' golf team and the girls' curling team. One team finished fourth at provincials -the 3A cross country team, and one team finished in fifth place - the 3A girls' golf team.

The school also had one provincial medallist with Shawn Lysons' bronze medal finish in in PARA Cross Country.

"We felt we had a strong opportunity to advance one or maybe even two teams in basketball, and we know that we would have had a strong contingent in badminton and track and field," said Smid.
