ST. PAUL - A home in the northern portion of the County of St. Paul was lost to fire on Dec. 19.

Ashmont fire chief James Preston confirmed that Ashmont and Mallaig fire crews responded to a chimney fire at about 3 p.m., last Monday.

"Upon arrival, the fire had already burnt through the attic and was venting to the outside," said Preston. Poor road conditions and extreme cold weather made firefighting efforts a challenge.

A tanker was also called in from the nearby community of Goodridge for support and the St. Paul fire department was asked to help with manpower due to the cold weather.

Despite crews working on scene for about seven hours, the structure was a total loss.
