ST. PAUL – It was a cold and windy night on Oct. 13 as the St. Paul Lions played host to the Wainwright Commandos during the final home game of the regular season.

The Lions started very strong in the first two quarters, seemingly unbothered by the chilly weather, ending the first half with a lead of over 30 points.

The momentum didn’t slow down as the Lions continuously got past Wainwright’s defence and scored touchdown after touchdown. Ultimately, the Lions won the game with an overwhelming final score of 68-0.

This marks the Lions’ third victory of the season, having only lost once against the Holy Rosary Raiders. The Lions will finish second in the Wheatland Football League as the regular season wraps up.

On Oct. 27, the Lions will be hosting the Cold Lake Royals at 7 p.m., at the St. Paul Regional High School football field.

Mark Tichkowsky, head coach for the Lions, expects it will be a tough game. While the Lions prevailed over the Royals in a previous match-up, 17-6, the Royals proved to be a strong team both defensively and offensively.

“The game could have been a lot different, for sure,” said Tichkowsky. The coach encourages the community to come out and support the team on Oct. 27.

The only game on the regular schedule for the Wheatland Football League for this week will be the Bonnyville Voyageurs hosting the Wainwright Commandos at Walsh Field on Oct. 20 at 7 p.m. Bonnyville sits in fourth place in the five-team league, while Wainwright is in fifth place.
