ST. PAUL - A group of athletes from the Northeast Alberta Track Club (NEAT) took part in the Alberta Indoor Games at Universiade Pavilion in Edmonton on Feb. 15 and 16, with a few athletes offering some impressive performances.

The Alberta Indoor Games act as the provincial championships for athletes competing in the U10/U12/U14 and Masters.

Kayla Mangatal finished in first place in the U16 triple jump, with a distance of 9.06 metres (previous best was 8.97 metres). Dorian Tomlinson finished in second place in the U16 shot put, with a distance of 10.98 metres (previous best was 9.58 metres).

“Kayla . . . did break through at this meet and found herself with a couple of personal bests in the triple jump and the long jump,” said head coach Rob Hurtubise. “She came away with a gold medal in the triple jump, but it was her long jump that really made me smile. Each of her qualifying jumps were better that her previous best, with her longest being a full 34 cm further than her best jump this past summer.”

Eric Hurtubise grabbed a second place finish, with a height of 1.65 metres in the U16 men’s high jump. Eric also finished in fourth place in the 60 metre dash, setting a new personal best of 7.98 seconds.

Relative newcomer to the track club, Dorian Tomlinson, picked up a silver medal for his performance in the shot put.

“We are expecting big things from him as he gains experience and improves his technique,” said Rob.

Mathew Hurtubise competed in the U20 category in the 60-metre dash and also set a new personal best, with a time of 7.36 seconds, finishing in fifth place.

“Our older athletes were standouts at this meet, really showing that their hard work pays off,” said Rob.

For younger athletes, the event was a learning experience, with many competing for the first time at the meet.

“Our younger athletes are starting to get acquainted with how a weekend meet works and appeared to have as much fun making friends as they did showing off their stuff in the array of events,” said Rob.

Competing in the U12 boys’ category was Brodie Huser, while Kara Gerlinsky competed in the U12 girls’ category.

Competing in the U14 girls’ category was Natalie Leroux. Also competing in the U16 men’s category was David Leroux.

Next up for NEAT athletes will be the Alberta Indoor Track and Field Championships. The meet serves as the U16, U18, U20 and open indoor provincial championship event and will be the last indoor meet of the season.
