Window art connects community

ST. PAUL - A St. Paul mom has kicked off a colourful craze she hopes will sweep the town to keep kids occupied and happy during the COVID-19 pandemic.

“I had seen a post in another group about a lady seeing this happening in other areas,” said Bailey Mahé. “I thought it would be a good idea to make a group for St. Paul and see where it goes.”

The group has gained some traction on social media and now has over 100 members.

“I was actually shocked it took off so fast,” she said. “With the social distancing that’s happening right now, it’s nice to be able to take our kids for walks during the day and look for some ‘happiness.’”

Stephanie Swedgan and her children put up some window art of their own because they wanted to spread the love and togetherness of the community.

“For me, it means that even in these times of hardship, we have family and friends,” Swedgan said. “We can get through anything when we are together.”

As the new normal is either being stuck in self-isolation or social distancing, something simple like art on a window can have a positive impact, according to Shawntel Kopeck.

“(It’s also a way to keep) a four-year-old’s mind busy,” she added.

Melissa McShannock and her daughters used a weaving technique to create hearts for their window.

“I figured it would be a good learning opportunity for them,” McShannock said, speaking of her two daughters.

“It was a lot of fun to spend a few hours with my girls crafting and decorating our window. I love that it gives everyone a little bit of hope, and some fun while they’re out for a walk or drive. (It) keeps us feeling connected even when we’re staying apart from each other.”
