Both the Ashmont Falcons senior girls and boys basketball teams won the home tournament this past weekend after defeating local opponents as well as teams from as far away as Red Deer.

Both the girls and boys teams from Ashmont easily defeated Thorsby in the opening games on Friday evening and handled H.A. Kostash and Mallaig, respectively, in the semi-finals before eventually winning the tournament against Koinonia from Red Deer.

Senior boys coach Tim Yakiwchuk said both home teams enjoyed the support from the home crowd in attendance at Ashmont Secondary School.

“The teams like playing at home a lot better, it’s much more comfortable for them,” Yakiwchuk said. “The crowd support was pretty strong.”

The boys coach attributed the play of the team’s defence to their eventual success, but said they still have improvements to make before provincials later this season.

“It’s been something we’ve been working on,” he said. “It’s not perfect by any means, but it has definitely improved.”

Each team still has a few league games and tournaments remaining before zone play in March.
