Canadiens, Wheat Kings battle through playoff series

The Canadiens will return to the Clancy Richard Arena on March 4.

ST. PAUL - The St. Paul Canadiens are heading into the week tied with the Killam Wheat Kings in the semi-finals of the NEAJBHL playoffs at 1-1.

The St. Paul team won the first game of the series on Thursday night at the Clancy Richard Arena, 3-2.

Although Killam took the lead in the first period and scored a second goal just as the second period started, the Canadiens battled back and scored three unanswered goals to win the match-up.

The first Canadiens' goal came from Saddle Lake's Kyler Steinhauer-Morin on the powerplay, assisted by Nicolas Beaudoin and William Chemago.

The second goal came from St. Paul's Jacob Leroux, tying the game at 2-2.

The game winning goal came courtesy another local player, Brendan Levasseur, in the third period.

On Saturday night, the Clancy Richard was again filled with plenty of fans, ready to cheer on the home team.

The game started out in Killam's favour once again, but St. Paul came back to tie the game 1-1 with a goal from Tysne Stanski, assisted by Kurtis Labant and Matthew McDonald.

A goal from Beaudoin in the second, followed by a goal from Isaak Watters, would give the Canadiens a 3-1 lead, but it wouldn't last long.

This time, it was the Wheat Kings who would make a comeback, scoring five unanswered goals in the second and third periods.

With the score 6-3, the Canadiens were able to find the net twice in the second half of the third period, scored by Labant and McDonald, but it wasn't even to even out the score, and the Canadiens would settle for a score of 6-5.

Saturday night's game was also a very physical one, with both teams heading to the penalty box throughout the night. Three of the Canadiens' goals were scored on the powerplay.

The Canadiens are scheduled to head to Killam for game three best-of-seven series tonight. Game four is also scheduled for Killam on March 2.

The Canadiens will return to the Clancy Richard Arena on March 4.

Elsewhere in the league, the Wainright Bisons are taking on the Vermilion Tigers. The Bisons won the first game of the series 5-1, and followed that up with an overtime win on Saturday night, 7-6.
