The St. Paul Cubs baseball team helped celebrate Canada’s birthday as they took on the Goodfish Braves in a couple of Canada Day celebration games at Jaycee ballpark. As part of St. Paul’s Canada Day celebration at the Recreation Centre, the baseball teams put on a show for the fans, who came out to fill the stands on Canada Day.

The sunshine slowly decided to come out as the two teams battled it out in the first game on the Cubs’ home diamond. Having home advantage seemed to be helping since with fans cheering them on the Cubs quickly took the lead.

Cubs fans definitely had something to cheer about as the team finished off game one with a two hit shutout. The final score of the game was 8-0 and this got the Cubs fired up and ready to go for round two of the day’s action.

“We made a few errors in the first game,” said Cubs player and statistician Justin Anderson, “but our pitching was really good for us.”

The Cubs kept it coming in the second game and were able to kick up the offence even more as they defeated the Goodfish Braves once again, this time 12-1.

“Start to finish we hit the ball well and dominated the whole game,” Anderson praised his team’s effort.

The Canada Day games were just for fun as part of the Canada Day entertainment and will not be counted towards statistics in the Lakeland Baseball League. Although not official league games, the competition offered both teams the opportunity to practice in a game situation and continue to improve their skills.

The Cubs also did take part in some regular league game action earlier in the week, as the St. Paul team took on the Cold Lake Cardinals on June 28. The team traveled to Cold Lake for the game and was able to return home with a 6-2 victory.

“Our pitching was really strong and everyone hit the ball hard,” Anderson said. “The team is coming together well.”

The St. Paul Cubs will be back in action this weekend as they take part in the Goodfish tournament July 8-10. The Cubs are leading the Lakeland Baseball League with a total of five points and hope to keep their winning streak alive throughout the weekend’s tournament action. The Cold Lake Cardinals and the Lac La Biche Dodgers are tied in second place with two points apiece and Goodfish rounds out the league with one point.
