The 18th edition of the High School Rodeo hosted by the St. Paul Agricultural Society had a new wrinkle to it this past weekend - a cutting competition.

The young cowboys and cowgirls showed their prowess on Friday night, separating a cow from the herd and then working as hard as possible in tandem with the horse to keep that cow away from the herd. It was an event that showcased technical expertise and it is one that St. Paul Agricultural Society president Andre Chamberland enjoyed witnessing.

“Cutting was brand new to St. Paul this year,” Chamberland. “We hope that we can have this event return for next year’s rodeo.

For the Saturday and Sunday portion of the weekend the spectators were treated to the usual rodeo staples such as the bull riding, barrel racing, tie-down roping, and steer wrestling.

Competitors came from all across the province to participate in the rodeo. There were many winners but Quentin Branden of Barrhead was a standout by winning the team roping competition, and finishing second in the tie down roping event. He earned the men’s High Point Champion title.

Kashley Seitz of High River earned the Ladies Hi Point Champion by picking up championships in pole bending, and third place finishes in barrel racing and cutting.

Chamberland was “impressed by the high quality rodeo on display throughout the weekend.” The ag society president also wants to thank all volunteers, competitors and spectators for making the week special.
