The first annual Kleinmann Cup Charity Golf Classic, which took place at the Bonnyville Golf and Country Club this past Saturday, was a huge hit, raising an estimated $25,000 towards an emergency services training facility in Bonnyville.

Though the fundraising event was developed to commemorate the lives of well-known community supporters Bob and Gisèle Kleinmann who died in December 2010. Kleinmann daughter and one of the event organizers Ginette Markham said there was an upbeat and fun atmosphere at the golf course all day.

“We are thrilled at the success of our event and so happy that so many came out to help continue the legacy of Bob and Gisèle,” said Markham. “It appears everyone had a terrific time.”

A total of 135 golfers took part in the Texas Scramble golf tournament, with the team of Vic Rocque, Sue Turner, Joanne Letwinetz and Randy Gallop taking home the inaugural Kleinmann Cup.

Golfers were not only golfing this past Saturday but also taking part in activities throughout the course of the day, including a Scrabble challenge and several sponsored and contest holes.

The day wrapped up with a supper and live auction.

Organizers said helping to build the training facility would make Bob and Gisèle proud, as both were huge supporters of the community's emergency services. In fact, Bob was a volunteer firefighter with the Bonnyville Department for 38 years.

Markham said organizing a golf tournament is a lot of work, but she thanked all the help and volunteers that came forward looking to lend a hand.

“The community is just so grateful. We had so many people offer help in so many ways,” she said.

“We are now looking forward to next year's event.”
