It was a good night for Lac La Biche boxers who won three matches at last Saturday night’s Spring Break-up boxing event in the Devon Community hall at the Bold Center.

Local boxer Pierre Berube was the first local fighter to take a win for the LLB boxing club after he fought against Blue Ridge’s Randy Thompson. The match started off slow which according to Berube was because he was boxing an opponent who was more of “a brawler.” But despite his fatigue, Berube came around and by the last round, he was able to finish his opponent.

“It was very tough. I tried to box him and I had a couple of clean combos in the last round that I think the judges really liked and gave me the win,” said the Quebec City native who is working in Lac La Biche right now.

Local boxer John Mountain followed Berube with a win after he fought against Edmonton’s Danny Sherbank in the 70-kilo category.

Boxers from across Alberta came out to fight and more than 300 people came to watch the 12 different matches, including Wade Lameman’s bout. He was the first Lac La Biche boxer of the night to get in the ring. Lameman’s match against West Edmonton’s Alex Kuprew saw a loss for the local boxer but he says it was only his second fight and he was still happy for the chance to fight.

“I didn’t really want to get out there but Ken [Scullion] asked me to come out so I gave it my best shot,” said the 12-year old who has plans to continue fighting.

The most action-packed match of the night was the final brawl with local boxers Jeremy Trimble and Curtis Ray who went head-to-head as part of a last minute arrangement.

“It was tough for the guys because they didn’t know they were fighting each other until the very last minute, after a few boxers stepped out of the event. Someone had to win and someone had to lose but in the end, they’re still friends,” said Lac La Biche Boxing Club coach Ken Scullion who celebrated his birthday at the weekend event.

After three rounds, Trimble won the match and although he was happy with the win, he said it was still hard to fight against a fellow boxer.

“It was tough to go against a friend. We train together. But it was a good fight and we knew that we weren’t playing for a win. It’s not about winning,” he said.

Scullion said the event was a success, adding that several of the local boxers will be fighting in Spruce Grove this upcoming weekend.
