The Mallaig Minor Hockey Association hosted the 790 CFCW Critters’ hockey team for a fun night of hockey on Thursday evening to raise funds for the association.
The fundraising event was attended by close to 300 community members – more than a third of them young children who were enthralled by the on-ice antics of the radio station’s husky mascot, Critter.
The mascot skated around the home team’s goalie, Ron Martin, and taunted him for almost the entire night, which saw the Critters team beating Mallaig’s team by a score of 13 – 6.
“They’re all coaches and managers that coach the seven teams,” commented Rod Hebert, president of the Mallaig Minor Hockey Association of the players on the home team, adding, “There’s about 15 of them in total.”
Hebert went on to explain that every year, the Critters have ten hockey fundraising games in different Albertan communities, and said their association was lucky to host the event.
“We’re hoping to raise about $2,000 from tonight,” said Hebert, adding that the money will go towards the six hockey teams and a pond hockey team with players ranging from age four to seventeen.
The money raised also goes towards maintaining the hockey facility in town.
At the end of the night, the total raised was about $3,500, thanks to the community members that came out to support the event.
“Tonight was great; there’s a great crowd,” said Warren Berg, an announcer at 790 CFCW who loaned his voice for the friendly match.
“Mallaig’s a great town,” Berg continued, saying, “It’s easy to see that they support their community in a big way, judging by the amount of the people out here today.”
