Last Saturday, 20 Lac La Biche Minor Hockey players looked every bit as professional as the Portage College players they skated with at the Voyageurs season home opener. The young novice and atom players were modeling their new home and away jerseys based on the Washington Capitals colours.
Nearly 400 jerseys – half home, half away – were purchased to replace the aging New York Rangers colours that Lac La Biche teams have been using for years. The upgrade cost $20,000, which was money that the previous minor hockey board had raised by working a bingo in Fort McMurrary, said Lac La Biche Minor Hockey president Brent Rabik.
“We’ve revamped the entire image for all of the squads,” Rabik said.
He said that although some of the jerseys have been replaced over the years, a lot of the uniforms were starting to show some wear and tear – which is why they decided to replace the whole lot.
“It’s the first whole-scale change-out in probably 10 years,” Rabik said.
The local minor hockey teams have a good relationship with the college, which is why they wanted to wanted unveil their new look at the Voyageurs home opener, Rabik said.
“We were very happy to be with them that night,” he said.
This season, Lac La Biche Minor Hockey has 185 registered players spread out through five age categories: Novice, Atom, Pee Wee, Bantom, and Midget.
