LAC LA BICHE - Portage College sporting officials honoured the athletic achievements of their students late last month at the annual Portage Athletic Awards Night.
Student-athletes who wore the Voyageurs jerseys in the 2022-23 school year were recognized in five collegiate sporting categories, plus community categories, at the supper and presentation night held at the school's Lac La Biche campus.
Several athletes were multi-award winners, competing in different team sports over the 2022-23 season.
Ashley Hennenfent received the Female Athlete of the Year Award. The first-year University Transfer student competed in three Portage sports this year — soccer, futsal and curling. She also received awards as the MVP on the Portage curling team and the Female Rookie of the Year for the futsal team.
The Male Athlete of the Year at Portage is Shaye Sommerfeld. The second-year Natural Resources Technology student is a player on the Portage Voyageurs men's hockey team.
The Volunteer of the Year Award went to Miriam Kabonesa. The student-athlete was a member of the soccer, futsal and curling teams over the school year. The award is sponsored by Lac La Biche County and recognizes the community efforts an athlete makes in addition to their academics and sports accomplishments.
"Miriam volunteered 67 hours in the community as well serves on the Portage College Students' Association, and is a student ambassador at the College," said Portage College's Manager of Athletics and Recreation Jim Knight.
In total, the awards night recognized two dozen student-athletes from the year of college sports.
