Racette Jr. High School proved to be the class of the 2015 junior high badminton SPAA championships that were hosted at three different schools on April 28. Glen Avon School hosted the singles competition, St. Paul Regional High School showcased the doubles, and the mixed doubles competitors showed their talents at Ecole du Sommet.
Racette captured the gold medal in 12 of the 15 championship categories in order to capture the singles, doubles and mixed doubles banners that were up for grabs. Two Hills, Glen Avon and Mallaig also had athletes win a tournament category.
Gilles Gervais, the athletic director for Racette, says the tournament accolades are great, but it is how the students conducted themselves that makes him most proud.
“I would have been proud of my students if they had lost 21-0 if they had acted with dignity and humility on the court. These are great coachable kids that really represented the school well.”
The level of sportsmanship and admiration that all the athletes had for each other was incredible. On different courts, players were commending the terrific shots made by their opponents, and also the terrific dives, lunges and other circus-like manoeuvres made in an attempt to get the birdie back over the net.
There were 190 students from 12 schools that competed at this tournament, which is comparable to the 194 that took part in the 2014 event.
Jonathan Randall, the athletic director of F.G. Miller Jr/Sr High School, says the quality of “play was at an extremely high level all around.”
