Racette’s Marissa Muench leads the Under 14 girls 1500m race followed by Ecole du Sommet’s Elise Lamoureux and the eventual winner, Mallaig’s Mienna Starosielski, at the junior track & field meet last week.

Racette won the junior SPAA track and field banner last week after finishing first in the combined team scores category with 1,033 points. Glen Avon and Glendon finished in second and third with 956 and 926 points, respectively.

“It was tight. Glen Avon had a pretty good team and took it to us in a few categories,” Racette coach Gilles Gervais said after the meet. “Some of these schools are doing a really good job in our district. Their kids are coming out, performing well and not making it easy.”

Gervais said that despite the lack of proper training facilities at the school, the athletes were confident and mentally prepared to win last week.

However, one event the coach was certain to improve at next year’s meet is the relay. With some practice and a strong contingent of athletes moving up a grade, he is confident the school can improve overall in that event.
