The Bonnyville Amateur Football Association is holding the fourth annual Scott MacDonald Memorial Fundraiser on Sept. 20 at Walsh Field in Bonnyville. It's football under the lights and organizers are ramping up to expect thousands of football fans. This evening showcases amateur football in our community and kids from Bonnyville, Cold Lake and Glendon not only learn the discipline and tactical game of football but also the importance of volunteering and giving back to the community.

The event features the Bonnyville Bandits playing the Lloydminster Mustangs followed by the Bonnyville Voyageurs playing Lloyd Comp. Activities include pie throwing events, a silent auction, scrimmages demonstrated by the Bonnyville peewee Renegades, 50/50 and new for this year...a Kick to Win! Ducharme Motors is giving away a 2013 Ford F-150 to a lucky person who can make a field goal from the 45-yard line.

Proceeds from the Scott Macdonald Memorial will go to help the community: 80 per cent of the money raised will go to the Bonnyville Cancer Centre, while the other 20 per cent will go to the Scott Macdonald Scholarship Fund. Last year, seven Voyageur football players received scholarships. The Voyageur pie throw starts at 5 p.m., concurrently with the Bandits kick off.

This will be the Bandits first home game this season, after winning Northern Bantam Provincials and dominating the Wheatland Football League for the second year in a row. After the Bandits game, the Voyageurs will take the field looking to get a win at home before hundreds of fans.

Scott MacDonald was a Voyageurs alumnus who passed away from cancer shortly after he graduated. Some of the players wanted to honour Scott and the memorial game was born. At the request of Scott's parents the Bonnyville Amateur Football Association donates to various groups within the community.

The Bonnyville Amateur Football Association offers a solid program, which boasts 90 per cent of coaching staff as Voyageur Alumni. The club has dedicated volunteers who have worked together to build a field, a club house, a concession and two locker rooms which is unheard of in a community of this size. For the 2013 season, the association has added a peewee team to strengthen the program and attract more youths to the dynamic sport of football.
