Elk Point Oilmen’s marks 40 golf tournaments

It was 41 years ago this week that the Elk Point Oilmen’s Association held their first annual golf tournament, with 72 entrants.

ELK POINT – It was 41 years ago this week that the Elk Point Oilmen’s Association held their first annual golf tournament, with 72 entrants. Neal Benson won that championship flight with a score of 114 for the three rounds, with Jim Levers, Ray Kolot, Ron Carefoot, Dave Slaght, Art Lypka, Gary Kaplin, Lloyd Jenner and Jim Grant the winners of the other eight flights. 

The first tournament also inclueded a barbecue, dance, and draws for door prizes.

In the years that followed, some of those golfers came back year after year as the tournament became a longstanding August tradition, paused only once over the decades due to the COVID pandemic. 

The tournament format had changes from individual to team competition, but always drew an enthusiastic group of competitors to the Elk Point Golf and Country Club throughout the decades.

This year’s tournament on Aug. 15 and 16 brought in 43 two-player teams to compete in the 40th event, divided info four flights, with first place in the Championship Flight going to Curtis Porcina and Robin Moroziuk, second to Bob and Tony Schaeffer, and third to Billy and Myles Quinney. 

Tyler Warawa and Duncan Gabert took top honors in the First Flight, with Brant Evans and Aaron Grosseth second and Adam Hymanyk and Ryan Mudryk placing third.

Second Flight winners were Brodie and John Schmitt, with Chris O’Connell and Bradon Boulianne coming second and Miles Yarmuch and Greg Babcock third.

Brent Becker and Lyndon Krankowsky won the Third Flight, with Allen Gramlich and Jordon Plamondon placing second and TJ Nelson and Jarred Losier third.
