With the temperature in the positive single digits, and a steady, westerly wind blowing over beautiful hills of backcountry, last Sunday made for a close-to-perfect day for cross-country ski enthusiasts to enjoy the Iron Horse Trail.

About 30 cross-country skiers participated in the first-ever Lakeland Cross Country Ski Club’s Iron Horse Cross Country Ski tour, which took participants through trails that were excellent, according to Wayne Krekoski, one of the club’s directors.

“Everybody I talked to was positive about it,” said Krekoski, while enjoying the mini bonfire and company of other skiers at the end point of the tour at Armistice Community Hall.

The tour was organized together with Travel Alberta, and was sponsored by local businesses and Riverland Recreational Trail Society, a not-for-profit charitable organization.

Krekoski went on to describe the trail prep as “excellent,” and noted the entire trail had an “easy, downhill grade.

“Nothing technical at all … anyone with any skiing ability could enjoy (the trails),” said Krekoski, adding that the event was a good beginning for many future Iron Horse tours that the club hopes to plan for the near future.

The club also has a set of trails 12 km long, north of St. Paul, and a 2.5 km loop right at the Town of St. Paul’s golf course, which members of the club use on a regular basis, explained Krekoski. For more information on the club’s activities and upcoming events, visit lakelandxcski.ca.
