Snowmobile drag race heats up Ardmore snow tracks

The promise of high-speed sleds drew spectators and racers from across the province and beyond to the Hamlet of Ardmore, last weekend.

ARDMORE – Those with a need for speed took to the Ardmore Motorsports facility and track on March 5, to compete on snowmobiles.

With some fortunate balmy weather, more than 100 racers, young and “vintaged,” participated in the Ardmore Sled Drag, which is held in collaboration with the Straightline Snowmobile Racing Associate (SSRA).

The Ardmore race drew in competitors from as far away as Calgary, Grande Prairie and Saskatchewan.

The Saturday event hosted 28 racing heats from Classic Super Stock to Outlaw, with many resulting in close races – and one deemed an “absolute tie.”

“Something happened that we have never seen before,” wrote Mike LaValley in a results report.

“In the Top 2 Stroke final, the sleds of Tyler Matt and 54 North Performance finished in what appeared to be an absolute tie. The computerized finish line system called it a dead heat and a video recording confirmed the result, it was impossible to call a winner.”

Rather than re-running the race, both competitors decided to leave it as a draw and split the winnings in a show of sportsmanship, stated LaValley.

A full list of results for the Ardmore Sled Drag can be found online.

The Ardmore Motosports group hosted a SSRA series race in 2020, prior to this year’s race. The SSRA did not hold any races in 2021.

Many communities in the Lakeland, such as Cold Lake, Lac La Biche and St. Paul, have also hosted a SSRA race over the years.
