The St. Paul bantam age boys have enough members to form two teams this year.
St. Paul bantam 1 has won all three games so far this season. The first was a friendly season opener between the two bantam teams. The second game against Bonnyville they won 20-11 and in the third game against Cold Lake on May 2 they won by more then 10 runs, according to one of the coaches, Brett Romanovich.
“They are pretty good,” said Romanovich about the team’s play so far this season. “They have some work to do but there is potential there.”
Romanovich is not a newcomer to the sport. He has played with teams in Bonnyville and went with the Elk Point Sox to provincials. Currently, he is playing with the St. Paul men’s team and coaching bantam ball.
Bantam 2
St. Paul bantam 2 boys team batted off against the Goodfish Lake Selects in St. Paul on Wednesday, winning 12-10 by the final inning.
A previous win this season against Cold Lake places the bantam 2 boys two for two, with losses against Bonnyville and St. Paul bantam 1 boys.
“They’re getting better every game,” said coach Danny Weinmeier after the game. “They’re picking up their skills. By the end of the season they’ll be where we need to be.”
The Selects started the game strong but let up at the end, said coach Stan Houle after the game. The St. Paul bantam 2 team scored five runs in the ninth inning for the win, he said.
Goodfish welcomed three new players this year. Goodfish was scheduled to play the bantam 1 St. Paul team on Monday. Results were not available at press time.
Bantam girls
The St. Paul bantam girls softball team lost on home turf to Pierceland on Wednesday, bringing the team’s season record to one and one. The bantam girls won its first game 10-9 in Goodfish on May 9.
The season is going well so far, said assistant coach Henry Thomson, adding that the team has learned from the loss on Wednesday. The team plays again Wednesday against Kikino.
