The St. Paul Lions football team suited up for the start of preseason training last week ahead of their jamboree this Saturday against teams from Wainwright, Grand Centre, Cold Lake and rivals Bonnyville.

“It’s going good,” Lions coach Todd Tanasichuk said about the practices. “In the spring, we deal with a lot of absences because of things like soccer and track. It’s hard to gauge where you are as a team.

“They know what our expectations are,” he added, regarding the players. “If you’re going to be a St. Paul Lion, you’re going to work hard. You have to earn the right to be here.”

The jamboree this Saturday kicks off at 10 a.m. and although it’s technically a friendly contest, the Lions will be looking to put some points on the board, especially against the teams from Grand Centre and Bonnyville.

It’s still too early to predict what the outcome for the season in the fall might be, but Tanasichuk and returning veteran Jason Jubinville both believe the squad is already showing some strength.

“The fitness is pretty good,” the coach said. “A lot of the boys are really active on our team. Our school program really helps them with our sports performance classes. If we can come back in the fall with a fully committed group, then we’ll have a chance to do some big things this year.”

“I’ve never seen the team like this from all the years I’ve been playing,” the third-year running back added. “All of the rookies coming up are much better and everyone’s a lot more dedicated. It seems like it’s going to be a good year.”

Being that this is his final year, Jubinville said he’s hoping he can get his hands on some silverware, as well as providing leadership to the younger players on the squad who may not see as much playing time as others.

The running back also said he’s been amazed at the amount of support St. Paul football has received over the years from the community with a growing number of spectators at each game.

For St. Paul’s younger football team, the Bantam Bengals, pre-season training begins this week ahead of hosting their jamboree on June 16.
