Savannah Mack of Glendon School, with a throw of 22.3m secured her a spot at the track and field zones in Fort McMurray tomorrow. She earned the berth at the High School SPAA track and field championships held at St. Paul Regional High School on May 20.

St. Paul Regional High School once again finished on top of the St. Paul Athletics Association (SPAA) high school track and field championship, hosted at the Regional track last week.

The gap between first and second place, however, has never been tighter.

A mere 17 points separated Regional High School, which finished with 1,295 points, and second place Glendon School that finished with 1,278 points.

“This is definitely the closest one I have ever been involved in,” says Hank Smid, the athletic director of St. Paul Regional High School. “Glendon put on a really good showing.”

“We have never been able to beat Regional,” says Daryn Galatiuk, the athletic director of Glendon School. “This is as close as we have ever been able to come. This is pretty big for us to get this close.”

St. Paul Regional earned the male banner by collecting 779 points, which nearly doubled the 397.50 total points captured by Glendon School male athletes. Finishing third in the male competition was Two Hills School with 268 points.

Glendon earned the female banner with 880.50 points. St. Paul Regional finished 364 points behind at 516. Ecole Mallaig Community School rounded out the top three with 235.50 points.

The other schools that earned points in the male and female events include Ashmont Secondary School, FG Miller Senior High School, New Myrnam School, the Kehewin Community Education Centre, Vilna School, Ecole du Sommet and Kihew Asiniy Education Centre.

This track meet saw five athletes set new SPAA track and field records. St. Paul Regional athletes set three of the records while Mallaig competitors set two of the new marks.

The records set by St. Paul Regional include Courtney Hebert with a 10.00m triple jump in the junior girls category, Matthew Hawiuk with a 5.91m junior boys long jump and Madison Trottier with a 4.83m intermediate girls long jump.

Mallaig’s Mienna Starosielski, with a time of 2:35:45 is now the record holder in the Junior Girls 800m run. Also from Mallaig, Samantha Weinmeier set a new standard with a 34.51m javelin throw in the junior girls category.

The six record-setters, along with each of their peers that earned a top-three finish, have qualified for the track and field zones being hosted in Fort McMurray this week.

“Zones are very competitive,” says Trottier. “I remember with high jump last year there was a three way tie for first so we had to do a jump-off for first.”

Trottier ended up earning a berth at provincials at that tournament.

The 2015 provincials will take place in Lethbridge from June 5 to 6.
