The 2011 Cold Lake Middle School Badminton Classic, which took place this past Saturday, was a complete success according to players and organizers.

“Everything went really well,” said Lori Hamel, a Cold Lake Middle School (CLMS) teacher and one of the tournament organizers. “The kids were all good sports and had a lot of fun.”

With 18 schools attending and over 570 students participating, the tournament was a big undertaking, but Hamel said all the games finished on time and no problems arose.

Several schools from the Bonnyville area took part in the classic, including Ecole des Beaux-Lacs, H.E. Bourgoin Middle School, Ardmore School, Glendon School and Iron River School.

Local students fared very well on the weekend, picking up 22 medals.

Even the students unable to pick up a medal were enjoying themselves. Abigail Dinn played four matches Saturday and won one, but her smile never left her face.

“It was really fun,” said Dinn. “There are some really good players here.”

After losing to Sabrina Warbeck in her final match of the day, Dinn was still optimistic about her afternoon. “Now we can go relax,” said Dinn, laughing.

CLMS was the host of the tournament, but the games took place at eight schools in the Cold Lake area.

Hamel said this tournament is a good warm-up for students participating in districts, which take place April 30 in Bonnyville.
