Thanks so some snow on the ground, a nordic ski walk event turned into a cross country skiing technique lesson on Oct. 31, out at the WengzynowSKI trails.

ST. PAUL - The Lakeland Cross Country Ski Club hosted a Halloween Nordic ski walk on Oct. 31, but thanks to there being snow on the ground, the event also included a one-hour ski technique lesson and ski around some of the trails.

A nordic walk technique lesson and walk along the intermediate trails also took place on Saturday afternoon. The event brought over 40 people out to the WengzynowSKI trails, located northeast of St. Paul, in the MD of Bonnyville.

Lakeland Cross Country Ski representative Joanne Lamoureux said a number of families took part in the event, including people from throughout the County of St. Paul and some from the Bonnyville area.

Moving forward, the ski club will be hosting a cross country fitness and ski technique class every Tuesday, starting this week. The weekly class will be co-coached by Les Parsons of Spirit North, along with Lakeland Cross Country Ski leaders. The opportunity is open to youth between the ages of 10 and 18, their teachers and parents.

Adults are also welcome to take part in the free activity, especially those who are interested in helping lead and volunteer with cross country ski programs.

In St. Paul, the classes will take place at the St. Paul Golf Course from 4 to 5 p.m., every Tuesday. Similar programs are going to be offered in Lac La Biche, Bonnyville, and Cold Lake on other days of the week.

Caretakers at the golf course do ask that people stay off the golf course at this point - with the exception of the specific Tuesday activity.

A trail clearing and work bee is also scheduled to take place on Nov. 7 out at the WengzynowSKI trails, and the club is hoping to get more help on that day to ensure trails are ready for the winter. For more information and to get involved with the Lakeland Cross Country Ski Club, contact Lamoureux at (780) 614-5522.
