It is with great sadness that we announce the peaceful passing of Nellie Hawryluk on June 29, 2020 at the age of 97 years at Foyer Lacombe Long Term Care Centre in St. Albert.
Nellie was born in Myrnam on Dec. 23, 1922 to John and Rose Magdiak. She lived on the family farm South of Myrnam until she married Dmetro Hawryluk on Oct. 20, 1940.
Once married, she moved to the farm near Elk Point where she shared in raising the family and farm duties.
In 1976 the farm was sold and she retired in St. Paul. Before long she found she could not stay at home with nothing to do and started working at Robinson’s and later Macleod’s stores where she enjoyed meeting and assisting the many customers. During the last few years on the farm they started to take extended holidays with the travel trailer throughout North America. Later they enjoyed trips to Europe Mexico and Alaska. One of their favorite holidays was winters in Mesa, Arizona.
She felt a need to be busy and loved gardening, cooking, baking, singing in a choir, picking berries (especially wild blueberries) and going for long walks.
She is survived by her sons, John (Joyce) and Ed (Irene); daughter, Myrna (Bob) Cormack; four grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. She was predeceased by her husband, Dmetro in 2008; brothers, Steve, Stanley and Peter; sisters, Anne, Mary and Josephine.
Nellie lived a full life, with ultimate grace and love of family and community and will be missed by all that got to know her.
The family would like to especially thank the staff at Sunnyside Manor in St. Paul and Foyer Lacombe for their kind and compassionate care in her final years.
A Private Funeral Service will be held at Grace Gardens Funeral Chapel, St. Paul. Reverend Father Peter Haugen will be officiating, with interment in Union Cemetery, St. Paul.
