ST. PAUL - The Town and County of St. Paul are moving ahead with extensive work on 57th Street and Twp Rd 582 this season. Bids for the work were approved at recent council meetings.
The roads, located on the west end of St. Paul, and north of town, are busy and are both often used by heavy truck traffic.
The town was approved for two grants for the 57th Street project, one being Municipal Sustainability Initiative (MSI) funding, and the other being provincial stimulus funding. The total budget for the town's portion of the project is $1.6 million.
At the April 12 Town of St. Paul council meeting, Director of Public Works Steven Jeffery presented the bids that had been received for the 57th Street project.
"Low bid for the granular base course and regrading of 57th Street was the County of St. Paul #19, at a total price of $439,963," reads the meeting agenda.
As for the paving of 57th street, the town's asphalt units were attached to the County of St. Paul's tender package and labelled as Schedule 'B' - a low bid came in at a cost of $288,568. The combined prices of the two portions of the project are about 50 per cent of the total budget, but this does not include utility costs for the moving of a power line, and engineering costs.
"If the above prices are accepted by town council, I estimate our project to end up with a final cost very close to $1 million," said Jeffery, which is well below budget.
He also noted that some of the land that will be affected by the construction is rented out to a local farmer, and that farmer will be reimbursed for any damages that occur during construction.
Council approved moving ahead with the lowest bids.
The project was also brought forward at the April 13 County of St. Paul council meeting.
A motion to approve the asphalt paving contract for Twp Rd 582 went to the lowest bidder, E Construction Limited, for a total of $1,159,830. That price does not include the town's portion for 57th Street.
The County of St. Paul will be doing its own base work on Twp Rd 582, ahead of the paving that has been tendered out. The work will take place between 57th Street and Highway 881.
