Body found in ditch

Local RCMP were called to Hwy 652, east of Saddle Lake Cree Nation, on the morning of May 4 when a highway clean-up crew leader saw what was believed to be a person laying in a ditch. The leader called police and RCMP found the male to be deceased.

“The male was identified as a member of Kehewin First Nation,” according to an RCMP press release, which adds, a semi-truck driver from St. Paul turned himself into police later that day.

“The collision is still under investigation and charges are pending.”

Later that same afternoon RCMP, EMS and St. Paul Fire responded to a pedestrian collision on main street in St. Paul. The male pedestrian was taken to hospital with non-life threatening injuries.

“The driver of the truck was charged with traffic offenses as a result of the collision,” says information from St. Paul RCMP.

In the afternoon of May 5, St. Paul RCMP responded to a single vehicle rollover on Range Road 93, south of St. Paul. The driver of the vehicle hit the ditch and the vehicle rolled into a slough, according to RCMP.

The driver and passenger were able to get out of the vehicle unharmed.

“Alcohol is believed to be a factor in the collision,” says a release from RCMP, adding, “A 27-year-old St. Paul man is facing a number of impaired related charges as a result of the collision.”

From the weekend of May 4 to May 6 RCMP from across the province responded to over 170 collisions. Thirty of the collisions involved injuries, two of the collisions resulted in a total of three fatalities, and two pedestrians were killed in separate hit-and-run incidents, according to a press release from RCMP K Division.

“RCMP urge motorists to exercise more care and caution on the roads as summer approaches,” says the provincial release. “Safety on the roads is everyone’s responsibility.”

On May 3, St .Paul RCMP along with Ashmont Fire Department were called out to a farm outside of the village of McRae were a fire was reported. When Ashmont Fire arrived, they found a number of buildings on fire in the yard, according to RCMP.

“A 75-year-old male suffered burns to his lower body as a result of the fire,” says an RCMP press release. He was take to Edmonton for medical care.

Mallaig and St. Paul fire departments assisted in extinguishing the fire, which took a number of hours. Many of the buildings in the yard were destroyed by the fire.

“The total of the damages are unknown at this time. The fire is still under investigation by fire officials and the RCMP,” says the release.

In the evening of May 1, St. Paul RCMP responded to a number of calls about a pair of ATVs racing and driving erratically on Golf Drive North and the Iron Horse Trail.

When RCMP located the ATVs, the drivers “took flight from police,” according to an RCMP press release. The drivers were located a short time later and two males from St. Paul are facing a number of traffic related charges.

“Alcohol was a factor” in the incident, says the release.

On April 23, Two Hills RCMP were notified of a substantial theft of grain in the Two Hills area, according to a press release from Two Hills RCMP. About 12,000 to 15,000 bushels of canola were stolen from bins on a vacant property.

“Two Hills RCMP have been unable to identify any suspects or witnesses in this file,” says the release. RCMP are actively seeking any witnesses who may have seen any persons or vehicles in the area in question.
