Children who love playing, singing and dancing will get the chance to do just that on April 7 when entertainers Lee and Sandy Paley hit the stage at St. Paul Elementary Community School for a playschool fundraiser.

“They’re very entertaining for the kids,” said Kim Ouellette, the English teacher for the St. Paul Friends of Playschool Society. Ouellette had seen the Paleys perform last July at Ashmont Public Library and saw how much the kids enjoyed it. “They were very excited and everybody got involved . . . A lot of the songs (the Paleys) are singing are songs (the kids) have learned in playschool or they’ve learned in kindergarten.”

For instance, one of her kids’ favourites is a song called One Green Jelly Bean, which was actually written by the Paleys.

After seeing the performance, Ouellette mentioned it to the society members, who decided to bring the couple to St. Paul as a playschool fundraiser.

April Pratch, a member of the society, adds that the Paleys’ show is a great family event, but it’s also for “a good purpose” in that any proceeds will help keep the playschool going. “It gives them that introduction to school and gets them excited about school,” she said of playschool.

Playschool is a great way for kids to learn structure and routine, in preparation for kindergarten, while also giving parents and kids some time apart, added Ouellette.

The Calgary-based Lee and Sandy Paley tour Canada, and have sung for children, their families and their teachers for the past 25 years. They have also taken their antics to TV with appearances on Treehouse and Sesame Street.

Doors for their St. Paul show open at 6:30 p.m., with the show running from 7 p.m. to 8 p.m. After the performance, the Paleys will be available to sign posters, and they will have CDs and DVDs available to purchase as well.

Tickets for the show are $8 for adults and $5 for children aged three to 15, while children two and under get in for free. Tickets are available at St. Paul’s Parent Link, or at the Co-op Mall on March 22 or 23 evening from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m., running concurrently with the tables for soccer registrations.

“We’re trying to make sure we have a full house and a sold out show,” said Pratch, as she encouraged people to come out for a night of “good, clean fun” that may have the side benefit of getting the kids tired enough to go to bed straight afterwards.
