ST. PAUL – The St. Paul Regional Family and Community Support Services (FCSS) is offering a free tax clinic from March 1 to April 29 known as the Volunteer Income Tax program.

“To get your tax return completed at no charge, your single income must be below $35,000. If you have a dual income, it must be below $45,000. All tax situations must be simple, and you must have all your tax papers in hand,” according to information from FCSS.

After making an appointment, eligible taxpayers can just come in with all their necessary documents, such as their tax slips, income support slips, as well as their identification, and volunteers will do their taxes on their behalf, explains Lynn Smid, FCSS director.

“Give us at least a week or so, for our volunteers and staff to be able to process those taxes on their behalf,” says Smid. “And then we give them a call back and we’re done.”

To make an appointment, call FCSS at 780-645-5311.

The program is offered in partnership with the federal government through the Community Volunteer Income Tax Program (CVITP).

“It’s really a community service,” says Smid.

Since the program started at the beginning of the month, the free tax clinic has already helped over 50 people.

Community members interested in volunteering with the program can sign up through the Canada Revenue Agency (CRA) web site. Then, they can head to the St. Paul Regional FCSS website or office to fill out a volunteer application form.
