Living Water College of the Arts, located near Derwent, recently announced its third summer of classical fine arts programming.

“This year, we are offering three programs instead of just one,” said Nicole Dunn, assistant director of development at the college. The first program, from May 6 to May 21, will be a study in the art of iconography. The second program, running from July 17 to 29, will be in the performing arts. The third program, from August 7 to 20, will be in classical painting and drawing.

Dunn said that it is often difficult for students to take a full six weeks off work to attend the college and so college staff felt that breaking the sessions into two-week programs would work better.

Each of the summer courses is “a live-in experience of artistic and spiritual development,” according to a press release from the college. “This summer has such rich promise,” says Deacon Kenneth Noster, president of the college, in the press release. “The students of each program will receive stellar instruction and an experience of a lifetime. They will learn artistic skills from some of our best professionals, while studying the impact and meaning of their art.“

The iconography instructor is Frank Turner from Port Coquitlam, B.C., who has been an iconographer for over 20 years. Of iconography, Dunn explained, “It’s a very specific kind of visual art because it has more of an Eastern influence. It’s different from Western art … and it’s much more structured. There is a specific framework because it really corresponds to the spirituality of the subject. It requires a different mode of instruction and Frank Turner handles it quite masterfully.”

Frank Turner is also involved with the theatre arts program as he is a filmmaker and actor.

“He has many Hollywood film credits,” said Dunn about Turner. “He is quite a character actor; he has quite a unique face and mode of acting so he is often placed in interesting small part roles in a variety of movies.”

The final program, a painting and drawing program, will be taught by a husband and wife team from Edmonton, Izabella Orzelski and Bogdan Koral-Konikowski. Orzelski teaches at the ARTIZA School of Fine Art, the University of Alberta’s Faculty of Extension, Grant MacEwan and Metro College. She is currently working on a series of nude paintings for her next solo exhibition. Koral-Konikowski’s works grace a variety of locations throughout Edmonton, including Holy Rosary Church and the Barcelona Restaurant.

“Izabella and Bogdan’s lives as artists have led to their collaboration on a number of paintings, a partnership almost unheard of in the art world. They will both be leading the drawing program at Living Water College this summer,” states a biography supplied by the college.

The program costs $1,600, which includes tuition, housing and meals. The college is accepting applications now, with discounts for those who apply early. Scholarships, based upon need, are available on a first-come basis.
