This year’s Saddle Lake Cree Nation Powwow offered those in attendance a special opportunity following the first grand entry of the weekend on Friday evening, as the newly elected chief and council was inaugurated.

On June 19, Saddle Lake elected its new chief, Leonard Jackson, and just two days later he would help lead hundreds of dancers from across North America into the Saddle Lake Powwow arbour.

Following the grand entry and inauguration, Jackson spoke to those in attendance.

“As a people we need to quit fighting one another,” said Jackson, as he reflected on issues facing the Aboriginal community. He thanked the Creator for the life that has been given, but more importantly, the spirit that has been given.

He encouraged people to come together to deal with issues, such as drugs and alcohol addiction. Jackson also noted the policy changes taking place through the federal government, and said that through prayer, change will happen.

Although he was honoured to be elected chief, Jackson said he does not take the position lightly and believes that “nothing is guaranteed.”

Saddle Lake Powwow President Ben Cardinal also spoke briefly following Friday’s grand entry, saying, “I’m very happy today” to see the new chief and council, but also to see many familiar faces dancing on the new Powwow arbour floor.

He acknowledged the singers who help make the Powwow possible, and recommended a prayer for “our friends in the south” who are experiencing flooding.

The Powwow wrapped up on Sunday afternoon.

Saddle Lake’s new council includes Herbert Cardinal, Terry Cardinal, Shannon M Houle, Charlene Houle White, John Large, John Shirt, Dennis Steinhauer, and Jason Whiskeyjack.
