Two separate incidents of excess speeding were caught on local roads over the September long weekend by St. Paul RCMP.
On Aug. 31 at about 3:30 p.m., St. Paul RCMP Traffic Services caught a motorcyclist driving in excess of 190 km/hour on Highway 28, near Range Road 91, according to a RCMP press release. The member was conducting traffic enforcement leading into the long weekend.
“The driver of the Kawasaki Ninja ZR750K was alleged to have been passing between vehicles and weaving in and out of traffic,” says the release.
Criminal Code charges of dangerous operation of a motor vehicle are pending against a 22-year-old male from Calgary.
The following evening, RCMP stopped a truck travelling 200 km/hour on Highway 29, eight kilometres west of St. Paul.
A 43-year-old male from Fort Kent is facing Criminal Code charges of dangerous operation of a motor vehicle.
On Sept. 1, a suspect attempted to steal a minivan parked outside of Sunshine Video in St. Paul while children sat in the back seat. The driver of the minivan had parked the vehicle in front of the local business at about 10:20 p.m. and quickly ran inside.
The suspect got into the driver’s seat and began backing away but stopped and ran away on foot when he realized there were children inside the vehicle. RCMP patrolled the area but did not find the suspect.
The male suspect is described as light skinned, having blonde “hockey hair,” and was wearing a dark backwards baseball cap with a dark short-sleeved shirt and dark jogging pants. RCMP asks anyone with information on the incident to contact the local detachment or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477.
Two Hills RCMP responded to a motor vehicle collision on Sept. 1 on Highway 29, near St. Michael, where a vehicle was on fire with occupants trapped inside.
Upon arrival, RCMP discovered “a large debris field and two vehicles that suffered extensive damage due to the collision and subsequent fire,” says a release from the Two Hills detachment. One male was found deceased at the scene and another male was airlifted to the University of Alberta Hospital via STARS.
The highway was shut down for several hours while an investigation was conducted. Alcohol is not believed to be a factor in the collision.
“Two Hills RCMP wish to extend their thanks to the several travelers who stopped and risked their safety to rescue the surviving male from his burning vehicle,” says the release.
The name of the deceased will not be released out of respect for his family.
RCMP encourages anyone with information relating to the incident to contact the detachment or Crime Stoppers.
