ST. PAUL – The final whistle has blown, marking the conclusion of the regular senior high volleyball season for the St. Paul Athletics Association (SPAA).
Nine teams throughout the region competed in the boys’ and girls' categories, and the top eight teams for each category will now compete for this year’s SPAA volleyball banners.
In the boys’ category, Mallaig emerged on top, winning 22 games and only losing two during league play. In second is Two Hills School, winning 20 games and losing four.
F.G. Miller earned third place in the standings, winning 15 matches and losing nine.
Meanwhile, Glendon, St. Paul, Myrnam, Ashmont, and Kehewin also managed to qualify to play at the upcoming SPAA Championship.
Girls
In the girls’ side, F.G. Miller from Elk Point took first place this year, having won 23 of its 24 matches. Two Hills, like last year, took second place, winning 22 matches out of 24.
Ashmont is ranked third in the standings, followed by Glendon, St. Paul, Mallaig, Frog Lake, and Myrnam.
SPAA
Brandon Strocki, athletic director at the St. Paul Regional High School, said he has been involved with SPAA for the last 10 years, and “the quality of volleyball” this year’s league has may be one of the best he’s seen.
It has also been more intense, with nine teams competing in each category.
Qualifying teams are now looking to play at the SPAA championships on Nov. 7.
The boys' teams will be playing at the St. Paul Regional High School, while the girls' teams will be playing at École du Sommet.
